Carlisle United were formed in 1904 and joined the Third Division North in 1928, replacing Durham City in the Football League. They stayed at the lowest level until they won promotion in 1962 from the Fourth Division. The joy was short lived - they were relegated straight back down. However, two promotions followed in 1964 and 1965, thus bringing them into competition with Norwich. The first league match took place on the 21st of August 1965, with the Cumbrians winning easily 4-1 at Brunton Park on the first day of that season. In the re-match the following January, Hugh Curran made his debut for the Canaries and scored in the 2-0 win (Ron Davies got the other).

Of the 18 League games in the series, 14 were played between 1965 and 1971, all in Division Two. Both clubs were largely mid table finishers, though Carlisle flirted with promotion in 1966-67 and 1970-71 with third and fourth places respectively. Honours were largely shared when the sides met, though notably the Canaries gained a 4-0 win at Brunton Park on the 14th of September 1968 with Hugh Curran getting a brace this time, with others from John Manning and Charlie Crickmore. This run of matches ended when Norwich won the Division Two title in 1971-72. As for Carlisle, they maintained their level two status through until 1973-74 when they achieved promotion for the only time in history to Division One, under Alan Ashman. They won their first three games so were briefly top of the pile in English football, but finished the season bottom of the division and were relegated.

A long wait followed before the next league meeting, and came about when Norwich had a single season back in the Second Division. Two games took place in 1985-86, City winning both - 4-0 away (Drinkell, Rosario, Brooke and Phelan) and 2-1 at home (both goals from David Williams). Norwich City's drop to the third tier for the first time in fifty years saw rivalries renewed in 2009-10, the Canaries winning 1-0 in Cumbria in the League One fixture thanks to a Wes Hoolahan goal. Carlisle soon avenged that result however, as the teams clashed in the FA Cup 2nd Round six weeks later and this time Carlisle won 3-1 (Grant Holt scoring for City). The match was the only one in history between the clubs in that competition. The Cumbrians travelled to Carrow Road on the final day of the season. Norwich were already promoted as champions of League One but Carlisle rained on their parade - winning 2-0. It was their first, and thus far only, win at Carrow Road.

The biggest Norwich win in the series was the 5-0 victory in the 1962-63 League Cup 3rd Round replay at Carrow Road. Terry Allcock netted a hat-trick. In the original tie, the first ever between the clubs in all competitions on the 16th of October 1962, the game had finished level at a goal apiece, with Jim Oliver netting for the Canaries in the first half.

Since the mid eighties, Carlisle have been stuck in the third and fourth tiers apart from one season. They slipped out of the Football League after 2003-04, but bounced straight back the following year via the Conference play-offs.
