Adam Drury Breaks A Five Year Duck

..............history isn't just about yesteryear, it's also happening right now, and is brought to you on a regular basis in The Canary Chronicles

When full back Adam Drury smashed home a Wes Hoolahan pass in Tuesday night's Championship game against Leicester City, it was his first goal for Norwich City since January 2005. Many fans will have a joyous recollection of his last strike which came in the epic Premier League game against Middlesbrough, which ended in a 4-4 draw. This time around, Adam's little piece of history helped the Canaries to a 4-3 win and moved them up to third spot in the table. It was only his fourth career goal in 333 senior appearances for Norwich and we wonder whether we need to wait until 2015 for the next one !

The Short History Of Norwich City Football Club

It occurred to me the other day that nowhere on Sing Up The River End! can you find the club's complete history in one short (well relatively short!) article. I have put that right by knocking something together and putting it into the tab bar at the top of the blog. It is not the finished item, I will iron out any wrinkles as I find them over the next few days.

But in composing the piece, it made me realise how horrendously unfortunate our history has been at times - last day relegations and by the narrowest of margins, three FA Cup semi final defeats by one goal to nil, two League Cup Final defeats by one goal to nil, and probably worst of all, three exclusions from European competition. I knew all of this of course, it was just that in writing it all up over a couple of hours, the painful truth hit me once more.

Another thing that comes over strong is that Norwich City have never had the benefit of a seriously rich benefactor, something others have enjoyed more than once in their history. You get the impression that balancing the books has always been a hard slog for the Canaries.

They often say in sport that good fortune and bad fortune evens itself out in the course of a season. Can the same be said about the course of a lifetime? I won't live another 50 years to find out, but I hope it does, because Norwich haven't always had the breaks when they needed them most, that is for sure.

Current Canaries Love Playing Away

When Andrew Crofts netted in the 42nd minute of the game at the City Ground against Nottingham Forest on the 28th of August, it was the 29th consecutive away match in which Norwich City had scored.

This incredible run started on the 21st of March 2009 with a Sammy Clingan goal against Birmingham City in the Championship. The Canaries then went on to score in their remaining three away matches against Swansea City, Ipswich Town, and Charlton Athletic. The last away game in which Norwich failed to score was at Blackpool on the 7th of March 2009.

In last season's League One campaign, Norwich scored in every away game - an all time record for English third tier football.

City also scored at Scunthorpe this season.

We hope that Sing Up The River End! has not put the mockers on this fine record continuing. The next opportunity comes on September 14th with a trip to Doncaster Rovers.

To put the record into historical context, the best ever run of consecutive away matches scoring a goal is 40, achieved by Arsenal between the 19th of February 1930 until the 25th of December 1931.

Second to that are Wolverhampton Wanderers between the 20th of December 1958 and the 2nd of April 1960 - a total of 29 games. Therefore even if we fail to find the net at the Keepmoat Stadium, we are still assured equal second place in the all time Football League records.

Needless to say, this run is a record for the club. The best achieved by some other clubs is Manchester City (25), Manchester United (24), Aston Villa (19), whilst of more interest to Norwich City supporters might be Ipswich Town (20), Leeds United (18) and Colchester United (16).

Update 14.9.10 : Although Norwich lost the game at Doncaster 3-1, a Russell Martin header ensured the record progressed to 30 matches.
Update 18.9.10 : A 1-0 win at Preston - that makes it 31.
Update 2.10.10 : And now it's 32 - goals from Simeon Jackson (2) and Wes Hoolahan in the 3-0 win at Bristol City
Update 16.10.10 : The run ends, 0-0 at QPR. So, for the record books it was 32 consecutive away matches scoring a goal, bettered only once in history.
